The St. John's Red Storm entered the 1998-1999 season unranked but loaded with talent.  Led by Bootsy Thornton, Ron Artest, Lavor Postell and with the arrival of freshman PG Erick Barkley, St. John's was ready to prove the voters wrong.  The Red Storm finished the season ranked #10 in the country and entered the NCAA Tournament as the 3 seed in the South Regional.

They made short work of Samford and Indiana to reach the Sweet 16 and setup a showdown with the 2 seed Maryland Terrapins.  St. John's jumped out to a 19 point lead at the end of the first half and the game was over.  

The Red Storm would lose a heartbreaker in the Elite 8 to Ohio State, 77-74.
